Rose, Thorn, Bud (Context stage)

When to use it:

When you want to develop ideas to both continue to be successful (roses, buds) as well as address challenges (thorns). Especially helpful in project-based situations to provide a balanced context of the good and bad.

How to set up Rose, Thorn, Bud:

Easy and simple: add the 'Rose, Thorn, Bud' activity to the agenda, and you are done! No mandatory configuration is necessary for this activity.

However, you can always pre-add any idea or theme - just click on the relevant tab and insert your inputs. Remember to define whether your idea is a Rose, Thorn, or a Bud.

Last, if you want, select an activity to evaluate the output of the Context stage and prioritize the ideas before heading into themes creation.

How it works during a live session:

  • Participants submit ideas for discussion by selecting an option between roses, thorns and buds from the dropdown menu, and adding the idea title and description.
  • Ideas are then reviewed on the second step of the activity. Use the left-hand navigator to select a filter and focus the discussion on a single group at a time.
  • If you have selected an Evaluation activity during the setup, it will appear in the next step. Follow the instructions of the specific activity to prioritize the ideas.
  • Finally, you will get to the themes creation step. Themes will help you structure idea creation in the following stage, where participants will generate ideas against themes. On the theme setting page, you will see all ideas listed (and prioritized) on the left-hand side of the screen. Try to find recurring patterns and similarities across the ideas, and group them into themes by drag-and-dropping them into the squares on the right. Assign a name to each theme.

Recommended time: 20-50 mins. It depends on the number of participants and the complexity of the topic.

Recommended number of participants: 3-20+
